EPA Signs MOU to Improve Access to Safe Water and Basic Sanitation in Indian Country

EPA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Health and Human Services, and Department of Interior to renew the agencies’ commitment to work together to coordinate the delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure services and financial assistance to tribal communities. The MOU partners intend to continue to work together to reduce by 50 percent the number of tribal homes lacking access to safe water and basic sanitation by 2015. The MOU builds on the prior partner successes, including improved access to funding and reduced administrative burden for tribal communities through the review and streamlining of agency policies, regulations, and directives as well as improved coordination of technical assistance to water and wastewater service providers through regular coordination meetings and web-based tools.
