Harmful Algal Bloom Webinar Hosted by EPA’s Watershed Academy

As part of its summer webinar series to build awareness about harmful algal blooms and nutrient pollution, EPA’s Watershed Academy hosted a webcast on July 25th entitled, “Perspectives on the Impact to Public Health of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).”   This is the second webinar in the series and featured presentations by Lorraine Backer with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Andy Reich with the Florida Department of Health who discussed the various ways HABs threaten the health of people and animals, and what the public can do to stay healthy.  Their presentations featured information about detection, data collection and surveillance, public advisories and mitigation, and other efforts to prevent public health impacts from drinking water, body contact, and shellfish consumption in waters affected by HABS and their associated toxins.  For more information about EPA’s Watershed Academy webinars and to view archived presentations, visit the web site HERE.
