Start Preparing Now to Nominate Your Water Systems for the AWWA Exemplary Source Water Protection Award

Get a head start this year!  Please take a moment to consider nominating one or more water systems in your state for the 2014 AWWA Exemplary Source Water Protection Award.  This award recognizes water systems that implement outstanding source water protection programs.  Up to three water systems are selected every year with consideration for the resources and sizes of the systems.   The 2013 award recipients in each category were as follows:

  • Small system – Brandon Fire District #1, Vermont
  • Large system – Reading Area Water Authority, Pennsylvania
  • Large Metropolitan system – New York City Department of Environmental Protection

Nominees will be evaluated by the AWWA Source Water Protection (SWP) Committee on:

  • Effectiveness of the program,
  • Innovative approaches, and
  • Difficulties overcome.

Nomination packages are limited to 20 pages and should highlight program components including vision, goals, characterization, action plans, implementation and outcomes.  The first six (6) application questions directly relate to the program component criteria set forth in the AWWA Standard for Source Water Protection (ANSI/AWWA G300‐07). Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the specific criteria for each of the six (6) program components provided in the AWWA Standard. The G300 Standard and Guidebook are available from the AWWA Bookstore HERE. Subscriber organizations have been provided copies of the G300 Standard as part of their membership.

Nominations that are not successful the first year may be reconsidered for the following two years. The SWP Committee must be notified in writing if a nominee wishes to be considered in subsequent years.  It is also strongly suggested that the nomination materials be updated.  Nominations will be due by January 15, 2014.  A link to the entry form and 2013 criteria (that is not expected to change for 2014) is available HERE.
