Article Published on Application of Hydrogen Peroxide to Control of Eutrophic Lake Systems

On September 9th, an article entitled, Application of Hydrogen Peroxide to Control of Eutrophic Lake Systems in Laboratory Assays, was published in the Toxins (Open Access Toxinology Journal).  The article is part of the Special Issue on Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and Public Health: Progress and Current Challenges.  The article shares findings from a study that exposed water samples from a recreational lake dominated by the cyanobacterium Planktothrix agardhii to different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) — both with and without light to analyze the values of chlorophyll-a concentrations, chemical oxygen demand, and total and fecal coliform.  The results demonstrate that H2O2 could be potentially used in hypertrophic systems because it not only collapses cyanobacterial cells and coliform bacteria but may also reduce chlorophyll-a content and chemical oxygen demand.
