EPA Releases Sixth Drinking Water Needs Survey

Today (March 30th), the EPA released the sixth Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey and Assessment. The Needs Survey shows that $472.6 billion is needed to maintain and improve drinking water infrastructure over the next 20 years. This Needs Survey was based on data collected in 2015. EPA’s assessment shows that improvements are needed in:

  • Distribution and transmission: $312.6 billion to replace or rehabilitate pipes
  • Treatment: $83 billion to construct, expand or rehabilitate treatment plants
  • Storage: $47.6 billion to construct, rehabilitate or cover water storage reservoirs
  • Source: $21.8 billion to construct or rehabilitate intake structures, wells and spring collectors
