CDC Releases 2016 Biennial Water Fluoridation Statistics

CDC has recently released the 2016 biennial water fluoridation statistics. Some statistics to note:

  • Percentage of US population receiving fluoridated water: 62.4%
  • Percentage of US population on CWS receiving fluoridated water: 72.8%
  • Total number of CWS providing fluoridated water: 52,286

It should also be noted that new methodology was used in the 2016 statistics. Previous reports adjusted state reported community water system (CWS) populations down to the U.S. Census Bureau (USCB) population for the state and also adjusted state reported fluoridated population. This method often overestimated the CWS population because it did not include private residential wells or non-community water systems. However, the calculations for the 2016 data used a new methodology to calculate population estimates, which uses the Percent of State Population on CWS estimate from the U.S. Geological Survey.  This new methodology accounts for the state population on other self-supply water sources.
