Spills from storage tanks, transportation accidents, and other hazards can degrade water quality and threaten public health. Recently signed into law, America’s Water Infrastructure Act contains two important provisions that can help public water systems (PWS) prepare for the threat of spills into source water. The first provision grants PWSs with access to the state-level chemical inventories collected under the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), which can help PWSs plan and prepare for spills. The second provision requires that PWSs receive prompt notification of a spill that could threaten their drinking water supply, which will help PWSs respond to spill in a more timely and effective manner. In addition to reviewing these important provisions, this webinar will summarize the results of an analysis to identify acute spill threats for an entire state using EPCRA chemical inventory data, among other information resources.
