Global Environmental Consulting (GEC) is seeking a highly motivated individual with a background in environmental planning, data science, environmental policy, water resources, or closely related fields.

GEC supports government agencies in the areas of drinking water, water quality and environmental science. The successful candidate will have a record of academic and professional excellence and a clearly demonstrated work ethic. A successful candidate will be working directly with clients to perform both remote and onsite project work. Example projects may include business requirements analysis and then data migration and mapping to help clients transition between data management systems; analyzing drinking water sample analytical results data; summarizing requirements for implementing drinking water regulations; developing standard operating procedures and conducting training for Safe Drinking Water Act implementation in states and EPA regions; and working with laboratories to implement electronic reporting of analytical results.

Subject Matter Expert 3 Job Duties

  • Support to the Senior Subject Matter Expert in carrying out SDWA related customer tasks, such as training and help desk support
  • On-site SDWIS, SDWA and GEC’s Safe Water Software implementation and support
  • Data preparation, analyses and interpretation supporting environmental and water resources projects
  • Data extraction and organization from a variety of sources, including spreadsheets, databases, APIs, or web services
  • Data mapping including extract, transform, and load tasks supporting data migration from legacy information systems
  • Oral and written communication including writing and editing case studies, presentations, and detailed and summary reports targeting technical and non-technical audiences
  • Team member to support multiple projects with multiple project managers, which may involve shifting project needs and deadlines
  • Logistical and administrative support for GEC project teams including client preparing and reviewing project reports
  • Database administration including routine maintenance, trouble-shooting, tuning, backup, etc.

Subject Matter Expert 3 Required Qualifications

The successful candidate possesses the following qualifications.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and communication skills (written and oral)
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical staff and clients
  • Classwork or professional experience with large environmental data sets including sample analytical results, compliance monitoring data, water system infrastructure data, and Safe Drinking Water Act compliance data
  • Knowledge of one or more database applications (Access, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.), basic SQL, and Visual Basic for Applications
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Access and Excel
  • Strong organizational abilities, ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and ability to work independently with guidance
  • Five or more years’ work experience in relevant field (SDWIS/State)
  • BS/BA in relevant field

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred successful candidate possesses the following qualifications.

  • Knowledge of the Safe Drinking Water Act, drinking water contaminants, and compliance determination or classwork or professional experience with EPA regulatory programs
  • Knowledge of EPA Applications that support the Safe Drinking Water Act including SDWIS/State, SDWIS/Fed, Enforcement Targeting Tool
  • Knowledge of EPA’s Central Data Exchange and Shared CROMERR Services
  • Knowledge of multiple programming languages or Visual Studio Online a plus
  • Apache Tomcat Administration skills are helpful but not required
  • Oracle or SQL Server Database Administration skills are helpful but not required
  • Experience in professional/consulting business environment or Master’s degree in relevant field helpful but not required
