USGS GeoHealth Newsletter

Periodically, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) releases a GeoHealth Newsletter that highlights recent activity related to the environment and health.  The recent issue contains a number of features that should be of interest to state drinking water staff.    Three articles relate to harmful algal blooms, including use of satellite imagery, photographic evidence for the 2016 Florida algal blooms, and evaluation of connections between algal blooms and public health.  This last evaluation indicates that the reported connection between an amino acid released by cyanobacteria and some degenerative neurological diseases isn’t supported by the data.  Another group of articles examines the fate of chemicals and personal care products in wastewater sourced biosolids that are applied to farm fields.  Additional stories cover other health issues and report on many USGS employees who have been recognized for their important work.
