EPA Announces Small Water and Wastewater System Technical Assistance Grants

On December 12, EPA announced $25.7 million for the FY22 Training and Technical Assistance to Improve Water Quality and Enable Small Public Water Systems to Provide Safe Drinking Water grant program. This funding will provide training and technical assistance to small and rural water and wastewater systems, and private well owners across the country. EPA expects to award the grants for three National Priority Areas as follows:

  1. Training and Technical Assistance for Small Public Water Systems to Achieve and Maintain Compliance with the SDWA, including Improving Financial and Managerial Capacity: One to five awards with an estimated total of $22,000,000.
  2. Training and Technical Assistance for Small Publicly-Owned Wastewater Systems and Onsite/Decentralized Wastewater Systems to Help Improve Water Quality and Sustainable Operations: One to two awards with an estimated total of $1,000,000.
  3. Training and Technical Assistance for Private Drinking Water Well Owners to Help Improve Water Quality: One to two awards with an estimated total of $2,700,000.

Nonprofit organizations, nonprofit private universities and colleges, and public institutions of higher education are eligible to apply and must contribute a non-federal cost-share/match of 10 percent. Questions about applying must be received by Wednesday, January 11, 2023. The due date for applications has been extended to January 31, 2023. EPA expects to make the awards by Fall 2023.
