EPA Publishes Updated State Asset Management Initiatives Document

EPA has published a new 2024 update of the State Asset Management Initiatives Document. The first version was published in 2010, and the last update was in 2018. This version builds on the previous documents by adding information from the 2022 state capacity development strategy updates. Per the 2018 America’s Water Infrastructure Act, these updated strategies were required to promote asset management and incorporate associated activities. These activities are intended to help water systems improve their financial capacity to address infrastructure needs and reliably provide safe drinking water.

The document organizes and quantifies the state asset management activities into four categories: funding, regulatory, assistance, and internal state activities. The information from the state capacity development strategies is provided in: a matrix to show a snapshot of all the states’ activities; a description section that details activities in each category; and an appendix of resources with links to state program websites. States can use the information and examples in the document from other states to consider additional opportunities for enhancing their water system asset management funding and assistance efforts.
