Lab Matters Feature Article is on Drinking Water

The spring issue of the Association of Public Health Laboratories’ (APHL) newsletter, Lab Matters, is now available.  The feature article,Into the Drink: Keeping Our Water Safe, examines water testing practices in public health laboratories as well as the merits and limits of the US Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). January 2014 marked the start of the SWDA’s 40th anniversary and coincided with the chemical spill in West Virginia’s Elk River – an incident that served as a prime example of a highly-effective response infrastructure in action.  Of special interest to state drinking water programs, the feature article also covers the shift of SDWA primacy lab responsibilities from state laboratories to commercial laboratories.
This issue also features an article about reconfiguring the Laboratory Response Network for biological threats, a look at climate change’s impact on the world’s water, the latest with the Global Health Security Initiative and highlights from the 2014 Public Health Preparedness Summit. Don’t forget to meet the next group of APHL staff and read profiles on APHL member labs in Indiana and Monterey County, CA. View the complete digital edition.
