GWPC Releases Report on State Oil and Gas Regulations

The Ground Water Protection Council (GWPC) has released a report entitled, “State Oil & Gas Regulations Designed to Protect Water Resources:  2014 Edition.”  The findings in the report show that state regulatory agencies have significantly increased their oversight of, and rules pertaining to oil and gas exploration and production.  The report is an updated version of the original published in 2009.  It is based on a comprehensive analysis of the 27 states that produce 98 percent of the nation’s oil and gas.  Since the 2009 report, states have continued to update and strengthen their rules in nearly every subject area that was examined including:  permitting; formation; fracturing; well integrity; temporary abandonment; produced water; regulatory practices and programs; data management; and more.
