California Now Considering Large Water Fines
On Wednesday, the According to an article in Water Online, published by our colleagues at the National Rural Water Association, California’s Governor Jerry Brown is calling for legislation that would add stronger teeth to water restrictions. The State Water Resources Control Board has just announced updated water reduction targets that call for consumption cuts by nearly 36% over 2013 figures. While the state has authorized water waste fines of $500 for the past year, few municipalities have levied the fines preferring, instead, to educate their customers rather than penalize them. Brown’s proposal would call for fines for chronic violators to go as high as $10,000.
