EPA Announces Preliminary Plan 15 for PFAS and Nutrients Wastewater Rulemakings and Studies

On September 8, EPA released its “Preliminary Effluent Guidelines Program Plan 15” that includes three new wastewater rulemaking actions to protect public health, drinking water sources, and the environment from PFAS and nutrients. These new rulemakings will revise effluent limitations guidelines (ELGs) and pretreatment standards to limit wastewater discharges for:

  1. PFAS from manufacturing facilities in the “Organic Chemicals, Plastics and Synthetic Fibers” category.
  2. PFAS from chromium electroplating facilities in the “Metal Finishing” category.
  3. Nutrients from facilities in the “Meat and Poultry Products” category.

Preliminary Plan 15 also includes previously announced EPA actions to: propose a supplemental rulemaking that will strengthen ELGs for coal power plants in the “Steam Electric Power Generating” category; initiate studies and provide initial results of PFAS studies from other industry categories; and provide an update on the PFAS Multi-Industry Study. EPA will accept comments for 30 days after the Plan is published in the Federal Register. For more information, read the press release and visit the EPA website.
