EPIC’s 2021 Water Data Prize Invites Innovators to Solve Lead Problems

Calling all innovators in the water sector! The Environmental Policy Innovation Center (EPIC) seeks design, data visualization and communication ideas that utilities can employ to better communicate when lead is a risk to customers, and accelerate efforts to remove and replace lead pipes as the focus of the 2021 Water Data Prize.

Winners will receive up to $15,000 in prize money. Award categories will cover four main areas aimed at meeting new federal regulations regarding lead in drinking water:

  • Inventory: What tools and data can help utilities determine the location of lead water pipes? What’s the best way to publicly share an up-to-date inventory of all lead pipes in the city?
  • Mapping: How can maps of lead water pipes be made more easy-to-understand and interactive to make this information more useful to the public?
  • Equity: What decision guides and visualizations could support more equitable lead water pipe identification or replacement programs?
  • Communications: What design tools and visualizations could successfully give water consumers useful, actionable information on lead violations, lead sampling results, lead service line replacement status updates, or health information on lead in drinking water?

The deadline to submit your application is November 11. If you would like to learn more you can join EPIC’s Q&A on 10/6 at 3pm ET or visit waterdataprize.com.

Good luck!
