USGS National Model Estimates Groundwater Nitrate at Drinking Water Depths

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Quality Program has announced a new publication that provides high-resolution, 3-D predictions of nitrate concentrations in groundwater for the conterminous U.S. at depths consistent with domestic well and public supply well zones. The report includes USGS estimates for the number of people that could potentially be at risk from nitrate concentrations above EPA’s Maximum Contaminant Level if consuming untreated groundwater. This information can be used to identify populations at risk from high nitrate and can help focus monitoring projects, remediation efforts, epidemiological studies, and interim measures to provide safe drinking water. For more Information, read the publication here and visit the USGS website to access more online tools about the quality of groundwater.
