Louisiana Granted Primacy for UIC Class VI Carbon Sequestration Wells

On December 28, 2023, EPA granted primacy to the State of Louisiana for implementation and enforcement of Class VI (geologic carbon sequestration) wells under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) Underground Injection Control (UIC) Program. The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be the regulatory and permitting authority for the Class VI Program. The DNR will implement the carbon dioxide (CO2) injection well requirements to protect public health by ensuring they do not contaminate underground sources of drinking water. Louisiana is the most recent state to receive primacy for Class VI wells. The purpose of these wells is to mitigate climate impacts by reducing the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
