Document Available for Background on NSF 53 Filters
A good reference on NSF/ANSI Standard 53 is now available. When communities and water systems are replacing lead service lines, remediating school buildings, or just reacting to public demands, the inexpensive, available, and reliable point of use (POU) treatment device to reduce lead exposure from drinking water is a filter that meets the NSF/ANSI 53 standard. While it is the “go to” standard, the public and even water professionals may not understand what the standard is and how the devices are tested to be sure they are effective. The organizations that test and certify to this standard have joined together to produce the attached document explaining the standard in language the public can understand. EPA will use this as a reference as they develop material to guide the public in selecting the proper POU device to reduce lead exposure.
